What to Pack and Wear For Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda is carried out in the mountainous areas of Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga in Uganda where one can as well carry out gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. What to pack and wear for gorilla trekking is key when planning for your gorilla trekking safari. However, the landscape of Bwindi is slightly different from that of the two other gorilla habitats in Mgahinga and Volcanoes National Parks despite being at the same elevated hilltops. This varied landscape makes Bwindi forest cold, humid and rainy almost throughout the year than the rest which therefore recommends that as you travel for the trek, you need to get the best gear and make sure you find out on what to pack and wear for the gorilla trekking activity.

It is very important that after paying for your gorilla permit and setting aside the whole trip budget, you need to make sure that what you have packed for the trek is the best gear to wear for your safari trip to be the best of all other trips you have ever taken. Gorilla trekking involves a hike through the hills, muddy trails, thorny paths, thick forests, which requires that you must have packed the best items for your safari.

We advise that you look through our recommended items to pack and wear for gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Waterproof Hiking Boots are Recommended

One of the most important items that should be included as you consider the items to pack and wear for gorilla trekking are hiking boots. Due to the mountanious nature of the landscape, most often the hiking trails that lead you the gorilla habitats are very slippery especially when it rains which therefore requires one to put on very good sturdy waterproof hiking boots to provide you with balance and stamina throughout the trek. It is also advisable that you carry a pair of hiking stockings (socks) which will help you to tuck your trousers into them to help protect you against fire ants.

Long Sleeved Clothes (Both Shirts and Blouses)

You need to wear a long sleeved shirt and Long trousers (can be either Khaki zip-up trousers or jeans) in fact if you can get waterproof trousers to wear those. Both long trousers and long sleeved shirts protect you from branches, nettles, thorns or anything else that can prick/scratch you. We highly recommend cotton clothing types which are deemed strong for a typical gorilla trek.

Gardening Hand Gloves

Wondering why gardening gloves of all items? Well, these gloves are recommended because they are strong enough to protect your hands from thorny scratches, they will also support you as you grab on the tree branches for stability so that vines on such branches don’t pierce your hands. Of course, if you wish to put them off on meeting the gorillas, you can do so!

A Rain Jacket (Poncho)

Gorilla trekking is done in tropical rainforests which suggests that there are higher chances of rain falling at any time of the day, either before, during or after the trek. Therefore, we recommend that you make a shopping list of items to travel with for the gorilla trek, consider including a rainjacket or light poncho for you.

Pack Energy Giving Snacks

Gorilla trekking in Uganda can last from 1 Hour to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family allocated. And being a strenuous hike through the hilly muddy and thick forest, we advise that you carry some energy giving snacks to boost your immunity during the trek. Before departing from your lodge, you need to carry your packed lunch and lots of drinking water as you never know when you will return. Energy giving foods can be bought in Uganda or Rwanda so contact or ask your guide to take you to a nearby supermarket.

Wear a Hat

A good wide-brimmed hat will help to protect your head from direct sunlight especially during the sunny season. You can choose to include either a baseball hat, a cowboy hat, or purchase one from the local shopping art centers near the park. By the end of the trek you will be glad that you wore your hat.

Pair of Binoculars

Don’t forget that you are on a trip to Africa and therefore you will want to have clear views of everything. Bwindi Impenetrable National park is home to over 350 birds, chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys among other primates, forest elephants and buffaloes so during your trek in search for the rare mountain gorillas, you will have a chance to spot some of the above with your binoculars.

Insect Repellents

During the trek you come across different insects, therefore, wears a lot of insect repellent will protect you, also you can apply a sunblock cream on your exposed body parts. For trackers who are on a Gorilla Habituation Experience, which takes a full day are advised to bring the repellent in their daypack.

A Warm Sweater

Someone might wonder, a sweater in Africa? Yes, and it is important that you carry one or a cardigan to be worn in the early mornings and cool nights. It really gets so cold at night. In Mgahinga Gorilla Park or Volcanoes National Park, the temperature is at10°C/50°F and in Bwindi Impenetrable it’s at11°C/52°F and sometimesit’s lower than this. Therefore, this is why the luxury lodges here have fireplaces in cottages or rooms and other lodges give visitors hot water bottles for comfort throughout the cold night.

Porters for your gorilla trek

This is an extra optional item and we advise all our clients to take a porter for their gorilla trekking. As earlier noted, gorilla trekking can be strenuous and thus you will need someone to give you a push or a pull on the way to the gorillas. These porters go for a fee but it is worth it. Remember that these porters are actually school going students either in their vacation or have been chased out of school due to school fees. By paying some money to have a porter with you, you will have contributed to community development indirectly.

What is the right color for your safari clothes?

Bright colors like white, yellow, green, blue, lime, and black should be avoided while going for gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda since they easily attract insects. We recommend neutral colors like light brown, green, Khaki, therefore as you go to the mall for your shopping, please consider this very useful.
